Italian is one of the most loved and studied languages in the world. Some people study Italian in an effort to reconnect with their Italian family, while many others simply love the language and are eager to learn it. As established by the Italian government, people applying for Italian citizenship by marriage have to pass a language-level exam. If you want to apply for citizenship the required level to pass is B1. The types of exams you can choose are CILS, PLIDA or CELI. All of them are official Italian certifications, which means they are valid and recognized worldwide.
Types of certifications

CILS is a Certificate of Italian as a second language issued by the “University for Foreigners of Siena (Tuscany). It is an official title that is recognized by the Italian government.
CILS exams are scheduled twice a year, at the beginning of June and December.

PLIDA or Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri (Dante Alighieri Society Diplomas), is a language diploma issued by the Dante Alighieri Society certifying the holder’s proficiency in the Italian language as a foreign language. The official center of examination is Rome’s branch of the Dante Alighieri Society with academic approval from the Sapienza University of Rome. The PLIDA certificate is officially recognized by the Italian government.
PLIDA exams are scheduled many times a year.

CELI is a certification of Italian language competence that attests to language knowledge and communication competence. The CELI certification is released by University for Foreigners of Perugia through ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe). It is recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

There are six levels of CILS, PLIDA and CELI:

The different levels of all the certificates are based on the Common European Framework for Languages and they test five skills: listening, reading, grammar, writing, and speaking. The exam is in presence only.
